Frequently Asked Questions
Is each panel actually made by hand?
Yes. MasterPanels maintains a full-time production studio in Nashville, TN. By keeping our panels exclusive, we are able to maintain the high-level of craftsmanship this brand guarantees. Each panel is made by hand from the initial mixing of the Renaissance gesso to the brushing on of the final toned layer.
Why is MasterPanels Authentic Renaissance Gesso better than acrylic gesso?
MasterPanels boasts the use of a proprietary ancient Renaissance Gesso which incorporates a final layer that renders the gesso surface ready to paint. Our Renaissance techniques require multiple delicate stages of preparation causing acrylic gesso and its synthetic ingredients to fall short in both longevity and workability.
In addition, our Authentic Renaissance gesso is made with premium chalks and all natural ingredients. If you want a truly long-lasting panel, we suggest the time-tested techniques of the Renaissance over questionable modern acrylic materials.
Why isn't my paint being absorbed into the gesso surface?
Gesso panels have been in use since the days of 15th and 16th century Florence when the techniques for oil painting resulted in wood painting supports that survive even today. Part of the Renaissance technique required that the gesso surface benefit from a final layer that softens the absorbency trait inherent to gesso. Many years after the studio system died out, this final layer treatment was somehow lost from mainstream knowledge. Subsequent acrylic gesso panels made available on the art supplies market confused artists whose paints were being completely absorbed into the surface. As a remedy, artists have had to adjust their painting styles and apply much more medium than should be necessary when painting on a properly crafted panel.
What is the difference between Pro Series and Master Series?
Both series have the same Authentic Renaissance Gesso, are handcrafted, and have the same final layer treatment. So where's the difference? Pro Series panels are 1/4" thick and are suggested for use on location or plein air painting trips due to their portability. Pro Series Panels are available in 9 standard frame sizes and 6 classically toned surfaces.
Master Series panels are 1/2" thick and are intended for studio or exhibition artwork. Master Series panels are made with Italian ingredients and a beautiful luminous ochre tone surface. Professional artists tend to order our Master Series line while we find many students and workshops prefer the Pro Series.
